Let me see: you work on construction, never had a brawl even in school, and live surrounded by weapons. Why do I think something's off?
\

Because you have a nasty, suspicious mind?

I was homeschooled (and no, I'm not a Fundie nutjob nor an inbred redneck hick), and I work at carpentry with my father.

I have a number of weapons (sword, spear, etc) because I think they're aesthetically appealing, not because I intend to use them on someone (my comments to Judging_Eagle were not meant all that seriously, much the way I doubt he seriously murders people with a hatchet for having ponytails). The other "weapons" - axes, sledgehammers, etc - are tools.

Wait; how did this conversation get shifted around to my life?

Umm...

JESUS HATES GAYS!

Than ought to do it...

"Occidental" is a synonym for west; "Oriental" is its counterpart (meaning east).

So, if I'm parsing this right, you still hold onto a few Western (probably American) values even though you've had trouble breaking the conditioning of your childhood (i.e. no "daylight savings", no strong winter/summer changes in the length of a day).

P.S: I'm not trying to be an jerk, it's just my innate fascist grammar tendencies taking over.

Everyone can see you're a fundie, don't lie. Sorry for the mistake on the profession.

Talk for yourself. I'm sure JE murders everyone who defeats him in SCA events.

God hates you, and you're going to burn in hell.
Unless you repent and do everything the Bibble says!

I'll be happy to send you daily emails explaining at length why I'm saved and you're doomed to eternal torment (by a loving deity, no less) because you believe the wrong thing.

In any case, Jesus was all about arming his followers and stabbing fools:
Jesus wrote:But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.

I'll clarify that. You might think it bad as in that it doesn't mesh with your values. But how is it evil?
Sometimes violence is the correct answer. Not to dump on non-violence, great things have been accomplished without it. Non-violence is why Rosa Parks is a hero who really did something for civil rights. Does anyone think that would have been as powerful if she'd beaten the shit out of the driver?

The problem is that peace requires two. Without a public willing to listen and be convinced you can't win that way. Violence works better sometimes because even the biggest asshat is easy to kill.

Total pacifism is bad because it represents the complete refusal to use a tool when the situation calls.

To answer Lago's original question: the meme is popular because it is convenient. It allows modern moderate Christians to cherry pick the statements they like in the bible. It allows people to say fundies are shit without having to say Jesus was an ass.

[Edit] I went to a Catholic school btw. They completely emphasise the sort of quote Talisman provided. If you are like most school students and don't give a shit about the bible you won't go and read Frank's quotes. Just another part of entrenching the meme. [/Edit]

see, I see civil disobedience as non-violence. so strikes = pacifism to me.

When workers who have been unjustly treated walk away, they are being pacifists.

I wish I had time to go to SCA events, or knew where they were.

The funny thing is that the most "redneck" of my friends was in SCA for as long as a knee that he screwed up playing high school football didn't give out.

Really, I'm not the murdering type. Heck, I'm even against capital punishment now; and that's something that I was all for most of my life.

What are you talking about? Everything is about me.

Also, I always thought of Jesus as a very big, powerful man. Rumour has it* that he was born in a place where everyone looks like what some might call "ethnic" and others call "terrorists", and he was a carpenter. At a religious camp thing, one of the speakers pointed out that he was effectively a big, angry Arab and ran into the church, kicking over the tables of the moneylenders and delivering tombstone piledrivers to people.

That sort of stuck in my head - and the fact that he was a carpenter (I doubt being the messiah actually got him out of doing all that work while he grew up) suggests he would have been fairly strong. Which is ideal for the angry "I will break you!" type of person.

*Other sources, however, claim he was English.

God hates you, too. He told me so personally.

But if you send me $1,000 or your savings, whichever is more, I will personally pray over your donation, ensure your entry into Heaven, cure your nasal polyps, grow you two inches taller, and ensure that your children are blonde and blue-eyed. Send those donations to...

I hear that in China, Jesus was Chinese, and for Unicorns, Jesus had a horn that attracted all the fillies, if you know what I mean.

Also, Bigode, if you read about specific bits about human biology, mix in a smattering of weapon use theory and practise, mix in a smattering of different martial arts training and practise and add a dash of physchological study into the minds of people and how they think and act. You learn a lot about how fighting works and what works for others. Of course, being a good fighter takes years of practise; I'm a dilettante and that's fine.

Being in some sort of non-pear shape also helps, myself, I'm just barely a v shape.

Besides, there's no reason for me to really hurt anyone. I'm more a fan of never being heard. Or seen... Of course, the "____, you're a ninja" comments feel wierd when I get them. Really, it's that I just don't like to make noise; it keeps me from paying attention to the world around me, and the world is much more interesting than the sound of my own feet tramping about or the sound of myself breathing.

I'm more of an I shape myself; my Dad's family tends toward the tall and thin. I'm stronger than I look, though; schlepping 80-pound concrete bags and holding sheets of drywall against the ceiling will do that (see Bigode, we do some construction as well).

One reason I don't get in fights is that I'm very hard to provoke. I'm the guy who listens a lot and laughs when jokes are made at my expense. Short of actual physical assault, I'm willing to either ignore or walk away from about any offense.

I'm built like a brick Buick. As an adult, people have have yet to even try to provoke me in real life. And in high school, the taunting stopped when I picked a kid up and threw him and the desk he was sitting in against a brick wall for calling my girlfriend a whore in the middle of senior English class. Do something dramatic in front of about fifty witnesses and it tends to stick with people.

The next day, the leader of the gang he was in came to my class to talk to me. The teacher kept telling him to leave, having been expelled the previous year. He started talking shit to me, I told him to shut the fuck up. Like literally, every time he even opened his mouth.

Finally, he pointed at the hook in his hat (that was their gang symbol, one of those gold fishook clips you put on the brim of your baseball cap that you can get from Walmart for 99 cents) and said "You see this? you know what I fucking did to get this?"

"No" I replied. "And furthermore, I don't give a rat's ass".

Every kid in that class cracked up, and the dude literally shrank down and slinked out the door. Never had a problem with their so-called "gang" ever again.
In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
